Aging Well at Home

Building healthy communities among older adults

Aging Well at HomeAging Well at Home’s (AWAH) mission is to enable older adults to live with dignity and purpose in their homes and communities. We focus on naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs) where there are high concentrations of older adults and on independent senior housing. Working in partnership with municipalities, property managers, community organizations, and local residents, JF&CS has created a variety of staff development and consumer-driven initiatives that support “aging well at home.” These programs promote physical and mental health, community engagement, access to resources, and neighbor-to-neighbor support among older adults.

Healthy Aging

We build on the power of local communities to support positive aging through physical activity, healthy eating, social engagement, education, and the arts. By providing on-site opportunities, we make it possible for older adults to connect with one another while engaging in activities that are known to improve or maintain health and wellbeing.

We provide:

  • Consultation on strategies to promote resident engagement
  • Healthy eating workshops
  • Educational  seminars
  • Creative arts classes
  • Social programs
  • Assessment, satisfaction, and program efficacy evaluation tools

Mental Health

Mental illness in senior housing can be stressful as well as costly. It results in staff burnout and turnover, erodes community cohesiveness, and puts tenants at risk for eviction. It has serious consequences for the well-being of all residents.

We recognize the need to reach out and foster caring housing communities that are equipped and empowered to support our future population of diverse and deserving older adults!

We offer:

  • Staff development and training
  • Consultation
  • Online guides
  • Areas of expertise:
    • Social bullying and community inclusion
    • Understanding the impact of mental illness in housing communities
    • Optimism and the art of aging
    • Multiculturalism
    • Spirited aging: growing older in community

Community Partnerships

We work with municipalities and community organizations to provide the education and support needed to develop Age Friendly cities.
